On December 2nd, 2008, Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas indicted Supervisor Don Stapley, one of five Maricopa County Supervisors and current President of the National Association of Counties in Washington, D.C. The 118 count indictment is generally centered around Stapley's Financial Disclosure Statements, filed over 14 years and his real estate investments. Stapley strongly denies the allegations.
". . . A shocking overreach", "Political payback", "Outrageous criminal indictment": these are published opinions from our community newspapers characterizing and criticizing the 118 count indictment of Supervisor Don Stapley.
Our purpose as trustees is not to opine on the newspapers’ conclusions (though we do have strong opinions). Ultimately, that will be decided by competent judges in black robes, honoring the presumption of innocence.
Our present purposes are simpler. They are threefold.
First, to show our support for someone with an excellent reputation who has dedicated much of his adult life in service to our communities;
Second, to assist with the inevitable and enormous legal fees and costs; and
Third, to encourage others to stand up to intimidation and make a choice.
We are a diverse group. We are storekeepers, administrators, builders, merchants and lawyers; and, while we represent diverse political and social ideologies, we nevertheless are united in a willingness to ignore intimidation and to assist someone who deserves better.
